While not a rescue group, we have rescued some dogs as we carry out our mission to educate, empower and transform Houston's East End community by educating residents and raising awareness about proper animal care and the importance of spaying/neutering pets.A Home For Allhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17224547157168750265noreply@blogger.comBlogger65125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6476817818110867319.post-13228493841343718362015-08-11T20:36:00.001-05:002015-08-11T20:36:23.899-05:00Meet MurphyBarrio Dogs is happy to be participating in 2015's Clear the Shelters program with Telemundo and KPRC Click2 Houston. One of the dogs we're featuring is Murphy.
Otis was our first embedded collar dog and we used his picture to raise awareness of this situation that occurs when people put a collar on a dog and later abandon the dog or it runs away. As the dog grows, the collar cannot expand and the dog's skin grows around it resulting in severe infection and injury. Because Otis was rescued, he recovered but if not treated, an animal probably will not survive an embedded collar. For more information about Otis, contact tauna@barriodogs.org.
him? His nickname is "Cookie Monster" because he loves all treats but his favorite treats are peanut butter-flavored ones. Kale
suffered so much while he was living on the streets but he has moved past that
and is so happy and grateful to be safe!
Lady is still living in boarding and could really benefit from a
foster or better yet, a forever home. Lady has cancer on one of her hind legs
but that doesn't stop her from being the happy dog that she is. Some days
her leg may be bothering her so be careful and keep an eye out for that; on those days, keep her activity to a minimum. She loves to hang out in the yard or go for a walk. She is
great on a leash and is a good dog to walk for beginners.
Renata would be very happy if you could do two of her favorite things:
the first is spend time with her in the play yard because she loves being there. The second is go out for a walk so that she can relieve
some kennel stress. Renata spent most of her life tied to a tree and
neglected. No wonder this girl is so thankful when she gets lots of attention
from our volunteers.
Rosebud is now safe and off the streets of Sunnyside. This gentle giant girl
is a true sweetheart worth getting to know. She has started a new life and
like all the rescues, is ready for a forever home. Due to her heartworm
condition (which is being treated), her activity level must be kept low per veterinarian's orders. We
encourage volunteers to only take Rosebud out for low activity play time in the yard
as opposed to a walk.
Tita and Mackenzie have gone into foster homes although you may see them in boarding from time to time. We are grateful for our fosters who give the dogs a chance to live in
a real home, sometimes for the first time ever, while we find them a forever one.

As always, we ask that if you visit the boarding facility, please check the white board for updates on all the dogs before interacting with any of them. Be sure and wear sturdy shoes and as always, keep treats to a minimum since the dogs are on a feeding schedule. There are poop bags and a pooper scooper and we would appreciate it a lot if you could help clean up the play yard after the dogs are out there. If you have questions or comments, please contact dulce@barriodogs.org and lynn@barriodogs.org. Kale is an American Pit Bull Terrier, approximately 3 years old and weighs 52 pounds. He was rescued from the Hidalgo Park area in Houston in December 2012. He was starving and suffering from various ailments related to his life on the streets. After his rescue, he was vetted and treated for his medical conditions and he has recovered. He has lived in boarding since his rescue, first with another organization and since last month, with Barrio Dogs. He loves people and loves lying outside in the sun; we do not recommend that he be allowed to go near any cats.
Lady is a beautiful white and brown Pit mix. She was rescued in October 2012 by a police officer who helps some of the animals she encounters during her patrol in East Houston. She found Lady on the street and took her home but that did not work out so Lady has lived in boarding since then. She is fully vetted and spayed. In December 2012 we learned that a mass on her back leg that we initially thought was a sprang was Mast Cell II cancer. The mass was removed and the specialist we consulted gave us some options, none of which are good: amputation, radiation, or chemotherapy. The plan is to amputate Lady’s leg although a recent check revealed that the cancer has not spread. Lady will have the operation when we can find her a medical foster.
Mackenzie is a beautiful blue Pittie with a sweet disposition. She is 3-4 years old and has been spayed and fully vetted. She was dumped in February 2013 near Broadway/Park Place off I-45 South. When we found her, she was bleeding and full of milk; she’d apparently had a litter of puppies some time recently although the puppies were nowhere to be found. Mackenzie has been in boarding since being rescued. She has an old fracture below her elbow that we initially treated with a cast; she wore the cast for several weeks but it made her arm worse. When she was evaluated by a specialist last month, the doctor removed the cast and recommended amputation. Since there is no medical foster to care for her after surgery, we have delayed it. We are also monitoring her to see if she is improving and able to use the leg.
Tita is a pit mix with a puppy personality. She is about two years old, weighs 58 pounds and has been fully vetted and spayed. She was rescued from the Hidalgo Park area in October 2012 and has been in boarding ever since. She was in bad shape when rescued with a terrible skin condition and open bleeding sores. She has fully recovered and is a joyful dog. She loves to drop and roll and get belly rubs. She is not very tall but she is compact and strong. For the past few weeks, Tita has been going into a foster home on the weekends.
Renata is a Boxer/Boston terrier mix, approximately two years old and 45 pounds. She used to be known as Princess and lived in Houston’s East End where she spent her life tied to a tree. During that time, she had many litters of puppies. After her last litter, a caring neighbor signed her up to be spayed by Barrio Dogs’ FixIt project in December 2012; after she was spayed and vetted, we decided that we simply could not return her to life tied to a tree so we asked her owner to surrender her to us which she did. Renata has lived in boarding ever since. She has a sweet disposition and gets along well with other dogs.
We are asking our animal behaviorist to evaluate him and will get a professional trainer to work with him. At this point, we ask volunteers to not attempt to walk or interact with him.

Raven and Zoe are two big black dogs who are similar looking although Raven has no tail. Zoe belongs to the owners of the boarding facility and has lived there for a long time. Raven belonged to an independent rescuer who gave him to Barrio Dogs to find him a home. We agreed to let an out-of-state resident adopt Raven last year and transported him to his new home. Unfortunately, he was returned by the adopter because of behavioral issues. Raven is back in boarding and seems to be content living there. He and Zoe are good friends and keep each other company. Although Zoe can be walked, we ask that volunteers not take Raven out of his run or try to walk him. He is let out at least twice a day by the facility’s owners and by our volunteer Ernie Zenteno.
Students from YES Prep East End recently spent their 2013 spring break helping Barrio Dogs. They had to do service days for their senior project and they chose us. Our trainer and volunteer Dulce Garcia agreed to supervise the students while they worked at the boarding facility where we house our dogs.

In addition to learning about the importance of spaying/neutering and appropriate pet care, the students interacted, played and socialized with our rescued dogs every day. They learned more about each dog and the dog’s background story. After hearing the dogs’ stories, the students did everything they could to make our rescues happy to make up for the bad life they had before they were rescued and our dogs were overjoyed to have the students' company.

We are so grateful for the time these students spent with our dogs. We also think the students learned a valuable lesson about the conditions for animals in their community and ways to improve the lives of the animals around them.
We can't say it enough; we are so grateful for our volunteers who step up daily to the task of visiting and socializing with our rescues in boarding. Our rescued cats and dogs suffer from less kennel stress and are able to stay healthier. Thank you volunteers for taking time out of your busy schedules to brighten the day of a rescue. You help prepare them for adoption events where if they are lucky, they will find the perfect foster or forever home.

Here's Casey with volunteer Wendy who rescued her

Casey's skin is looking better by the day and she is feeling great. She is beginning to explore the world around her and like a baby, will use her mouth to discover new things. She will jump and mouth to greet you and get your attention. When she does that, redirect her attention by providing her with something positive and mentally stimulating to do. She loves when you throw toys or the frisbee for her to chase. Only give her attention when she is calm or her four paws are on the floor. This happy puppy will thank you for teaching her good manners.
Lady was diagnosed with cancer a few months back and needs a quiet home where she can rest and receive care and attention. She is not particularly tolerant of other dogs around her when she's not feeling well and who can blame her? However, Lady has become friends with Casey and likes to play with her when she's feeling good. Lady loves people and going out for walks which makes it hard to believe no one has scooped up this beautiful girl.

Mackenzie

Mackenzie is another of our rescues that needs a foster home because of her injured leg. She has to wear a cast for several weeks and the cast must be always be kept dry. We ask that volunteers put a plastic bag around the cast and secure it with rubber bands before taking her out in the yard; the materials are in a bag hanging outside her kennel.
Renata is a unique looking dog with a great disposition. She makes friends easily whether human or four-legged. Her best friends are Tita and Casey; sometimes they can all get play time together with supervised attention. If you can visit her, please make her day by taking her out for a walk or spending play time out in the yard (hint, hint: she loves toys).

Zoe continues to be in the program although she doesn't belong to
Tita is one of our strongest girls in rescue which makes us believe that she is feeling better and has recovered from her condition when she was rescued. If you need a good workout, she's your girl! She will jump and get mouthy when she's excited and we advise that you don't give her attention if she does that. Instead give her attention when she is calm and not jumping on or mouthing you. Giving her toys and petting her when she is sitting or down on her four paws lets her know that she is being appropriate. You can also try giving her toys to chase around; she really loves those but what she loves best is interacting with you.
Edward, Fred, Illeana and Chief still need a home. Please share their pictures and help us find them a home. They are growing up quickly in boarding and missing out on a lot. Volunteers help us clean their cages, litter boxes and give them attention. This cheers them up a bit but we know they will be the happiest if they had a home where they can roam free. Welcome all new volunteers and thank you for making the lives of our rescues in boarding less stressful. We have new dogs and feline friends in our program that can really benefit from social time so we need your help more than ever! We also want to share great news regarding some

Love bug Cooper
has been adopted by our very own volunteer Buffy after living in
boarding for three years. Buffy fell in love with
Cooper while working with AHFA and was finally able to bring him into
her home. Cooper’s early life was difficult and sad but luckily, he is
in a wonderful home with an owner who loves him dearly. He is loving
life in his new home and we couldn’t be happier for him.
trainer, John McDonald, volunteered to help us and has been working
regularly with Bruno. We hope that with John’s attention and training,
Bruno will be able to start attending adoption events and will
eventually make a successful transition into a home.
Attie
is very social and loves to play. Like any cat she can bite when she’s
tired of someone picking her up. Cats are very sensitive and it’s
important to put them down if they are feeling uncomfortable; that is
one way to prevent scratches or bites. Chief,
Edward and Ileana have also not been able to find homes which is
unfortunate since they are young and boarding is no place for them.

We had an orientation session for new volunteers last Sunday, January 13. We had a great turnout and everyone got to meet our doggies in boarding. We hope to have another volunteer session in February and will keep you posted. Thank you to everyone who attended the orientation and we look forward to seeing you at the kennel!
As of right now, each dog in boarding has different needs relating to both training and behavior. We would love to give all the dogs a basic training program but that seems to work better after they are in a foster or forever home. It's a little hectic at the boarding facility and the staff does not have time to reinforce the lessons learned in training so the process can be a little slow. We think the best thing we can do is work with each dog’s priority issues. Here are the most important ones:

Tita

Tita was abandoned by uncaring owner(s) in Houston’s East End, Hidalgo Park area, an area known for “dog dumping”. She was on the streets for several months before we rescued her in October 2012. She was in bad shape with a terrible skin condition; certain parts of her body were raw and bloody. She has recovered and is doing well. She needs to work on no jumping and no mouthing; also loose leash walking.

Renata

Renata used to be known as Princess and some of the kennel staff may still call her that. She lived in Houston’s East End where she spent her life tried to a tree. A caring neighbor signed her up to be spayed by Barrio Dogs’ FixIt project on 12/1/12; after she was spayed and vetted that day, we realized we could not return her to life tied to a tree. The owner agreed to surrender her to us and we had a contest to pick a new name for her. We picked “Renata” which means reborn in Latin, a name that symbolizes the new and better life that is in store for her. She needs to work on no jumping and loose leash walking.

Lady

Lady was rescued in October 2012 by a police officer who does a great deal to help the animals she encounters during her patrol in East Houston. She found Lady on the street and took her home; unfortunately, her other dogs did not get along with lady and attacked her. She has been in boarding since then. Lady had a growth on her back leg; when it was removed, we learned it was cancer. We are currently debating treatment options.

Lady has been having on and off incidents at adoption events (reactive to other dogs). At boarding, the situation is managed by keeping her away from other dogs. Considering that she has cancer and has already gone through one surgery, we don't want to add stress to her situation. She seems to have days when she feels down and days when she is happy. We think her reactive behavior derives from her cancer and related pain she may be having; in the future she will need to undergo a behavior modification program to address those issues. Her ideal home will be a quiet one.

Buffy and Cooper

Cooper has been adopted by AFHA volunteer Buffy Martines. He had been in boarding for several months before we began working with him. When rescued, his face was scarred and the vet guessed he may have been used as a bait dog. He responded very well to contact with volunteers, was responsive to training and certainly enjoyed our attention. We think AFHA’s work with Cooper made him more sociable and adoptable and we wish him and Buffy the very best.

Copper recently went into a foster home and we are keeping our fingers crossed that it works out. He was a puppy when we found him in a dumpster two years ago. He was sick and emaciated and has lived most of his life in boarding. Tauna Ready knows him well and is the ideal person to talk more about his personality to you. His issues derive more from being undersocialized and spending most of his life in boarding. We hope his foster situation works out and that we don’t see him back at the kennel.
Harietta and Burgie are new at the kennel. They were rescued in January 2013 from a car lot in the East End. The car lot owner said they were sleeping under the building which is why they were covered with fleas. They have been vetted and spayed and we are getting to know them. We are keeping them a run together with a blanket.
Burgie the boxer will come right out of the run but Harietta needs to be pulled out with a leash. Yesterday she tried to bite the leash off and refused to walk but the next day she came right out. Dogs are amazing and resilient and we have high hopes for both Burgie and Harietta. We will be evaluating them soon and can give you more information about their training needs after that.

It’s a busy time of the year for most of us with the holidays right around the corner. During this time, we want to remind everyone that as we go about our holiday activities, there are still some lonely rescues living in boarding that would love your company. Please consider coming out to play, socialize or walk our Barrio Dogs in boarding; you will absolutely brighten their day. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Dulce Garcia at dulce@barriodogs.org

In the mean time please take a moment to read all about the latest on our rescues at boarding.
Derek has been adopted by one of our very own AHFA volunteers and we are certain it was love at first sight. Thanks to Caitrin for giving Derek a loving home. We are all so happy for him and know that he will enjoy the rest of his life with his new family. He will be in boarding for a few more days until his new forever home is ready.

Copper is our newest addition. He had been previously living at another boarding facility but we wanted to bring him closer to home. He is a beautiful dog who has been in boarding for about two years and needs a foster or forever home. He has endured so much and is a survivor; he was a puppy when we found him in a trash dumpster outside a paint store in the East End. He was emaciated and sick but has recovered and needs a home. Please be advised that he does not do well with other dogs. One-on-one social time with volunteers will help him a lot and make him very happy.
Cooper is still in boarding and has been ready for a forever home for a while! We are certain that there is someone out there for him. He enjoys walks, playing fetch, riding in cars and would love to go home with you. He had a lot of fun at the Blessing of the Animals at Christ Church Cathedral last October.
Tita was rescued from the streets near Hidalgo Park and was in horrible condition with skin issues and other illnesses. She has recovered physically but is a bit shy. She is very sweet and likes to be taken into the yard to get a break from the kennel environment. She’s used to more freedom on the street and is having some trouble living in the kennel. More walks and socialization would help her so much!
Renata is the newest addition to our Barrio Dog family in boarding. She used to be known as Princess and lived near Lawndale and Broadway in
Houston’s East End where she spent her life tried to a tree. During that
time, she had many litters of puppies. After her last litter, a caring
neighbor signed her up for Barrio Dogs' FixIt spay/neuter project. When we picked her up for transport on Saturday, December 1, 2012, we saw how she was living. After she was
spayed and vetted that day, we decided that we simply could not return her to life tied to a tree. We talked to the owner and she agreed to surrender Princess to us. We
had a contest to pick a new name for her. We picked the name “Renata”

new and better life we want for her. She is doing well in boarding and is recovering from her various ailments but needs a forever home.

We appreciate the time, hard work and dedication of all the volunteers in the Barrio Dogs "A Home For All" program. They are truly working hard to make the boarding facility a great place for our rescues to stay at until they can find a forever home. In addition, the program provides various opportunities for volunteers to work hands on with the rescues to prepare them for adoption events. We have seen such a difference for the better in all our dogs from both the individual attention and the ability to get out into the world and participate in adoption events.
We encourage volunteers to continue socializing him so that he can continue making improvements.

Sparky and Spuds (siblings ) are new to the program and belong to an independent rescuer. They have been in boarding for a while and undergoing treatment for their skin condition. They are around 5 months old and taking a 3 week training course which they are mastering. Volunteers are more than welcome to spend time with them, but they are still uncertain about going out for a walk. They are fearful of cars and the loud noise outside. The best is to stick to taking them out only in the play yard area.

Bruno is still only to be handled by staff Ernie and Dulce
because of our concerns with his behavior. He has been receiving social
time in the play yard area on his own. Although he spends time alone in
the yard he is supervised the whole time while he runs around enjoying
his tug toys. The idea is for him not to practice mouthing or jumping on
anyone; prevention is key. Arrangements are being made for him to be
transferred to another facility that can give him the individualized
behavioral attention he needs.

Volunteers are more than welcome to join Dulce while she is training any of the dogs; contact her at dulce@barriodogs.org for times she will be at the kennel.A Home For Allhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17224547157168750265noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6476817818110867319.post-52544496481809436302012-10-18T13:24:00.000-05:002012-10-18T13:29:59.821-05:00Update: October 4-18, 2012Notes by: Dulce Garcia
Barrio Dogs does not own a facility and relies on boarding our rescues until they find a foster or forever home. Many thanks to all the volunteers who come out weekly to walk, socialize and play with the rescues; it really helps maintain their health and happiness. In addition, Ernie Z. who visits and feeds the dogs daily plays a major part in helping socialize the rescues and all of them love him. Bruno has been living at AC Boarding for several weeks now. He is not a Barrio Dog but was brought in by an independent rescuer. We have been including him in A Home for All activities for his own benefit; however, we learned today that last week, Bruno jumped on and snapped at a volunteer who was trying to walk him. The volunteer was not injured but did get bruised.

We had previously alerted our A Home for All volunteers to use extra care when working with Bruno. We are now asking all volunteers to please not take Bruno out at all when you visit the kennel. We have reached out to Bruno's rescuer and owner to tell her of this incident as well our observation and concern that Bruno does not seem to be doing well at the kennel. We are urging her to work with a trainer and make other arrangements for him. In the meantime, please leave Bruno in his kennel when you are at AC; the staff at AC takes care of him along with the other boarded dogs there.

The Barrio Dog's rescues at AC have been receiving lots of social time thanks to our volunteers who visit them during the week. Short walks and play time in the yard have been helping them learn good manners and it's really showing. Many thank you's to our volunteers who take time from their busy schedules to give the lonely dogs some TLC.
Bruno is a strong boy and we recommend that you ask a staff member at AC to help you get him out of his kennel. He plays rough, jumps high and is mouthy. For safety purposes, we recommend that he only gets social time in the yard while you supervise him on the other side of the fence. Please don't attempt to take him out on a walk without any help. Until he learns to sit and calm down, his activities should be confined to the back yard at AC.
Kiddo is back from being fostered temporarily by Marjorie Jackson, who had to make a trip overseas but will pick Kiddo up when she returns. Sweet girl Kiddo is still a bit shy but thanks to Marjorie, has learned to gain more confidence, walk on a leash and explores her surroundings. To keep her safe when going out for a walk, place a slip leash on her with a body harness since she becomes nervous at times and may try to pull out of the leash.
Derek had a sleep over with his rescuer Claudia Almaguer and
really enjoyed spending time in a home away from the kennels.
His favorite thing is going out for a walk. It breaks our hearts placing
him back in the kennels because he doesn't want to go in and begins to
cry. He's been attending adoption events and we hope he can find his forever home soon!
Hoover and Molly have been spayed and neutered but are still staying at AC. We worry about them because they are missing out on the most formative months of their lives living in a kennel. They can really benefit from play time in the yard and going out for walks. Most importantly a foster or adopter will make their dreams come true!
Raven also attended his first adoption event at Martini Hardware and for the most part did well. However, we advise volunteers to be extremely careful with him as he is a resource guarder and will be aggressive when there is food nearby. Be sure and ask a supervisor for help with him. Do not give him any stuffed filled Kongs or treats because he may guard them. Otherwise, he likes attention and especially having his thick coat brushed. Let the staff at AC and Ernie feed him and give him treats since they are more experienced with him.

Izzy- This happy girl will be going home with her rescuer Estelle Mack! She is such a social dog that loves attention from both human and other dogs. We know Izzy loves Estelle and is happy to be away from AC although we will miss her.
Hoover and Molly are the puppies that were abandoned at AC by their owners several weeks ago. They really need a lot of social time. We hate for them to be growing up in a kennel and want them to be engaged with people and exposed to the outside world as much as possible. Right now is a crucial time to build their social skills so that they don't grow up to become fearful dogs. They will benefit from walks and social time with volunteers. Please consider fostering or networking to find them a forever home. A weekend foster would also be a great idea!
Markee has gone into foster care with the family that adopted

Markee's physical therapy. Thanks so much to this wonderful family for
welcoming Markee into their home!
Zoe is not a Barrio Dog but this friendly girl also receives attention from the volunteers. She belongs to one of the staff members at AC but needs exercise and human interaction. She will benefit from daily walks considering she is overweight. A Home For Allhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17224547157168750265noreply@blogger.com0
