Meet Otis

Barrio Dogs is happy to be participating in 2015's Clear the Shelters program with Telemundo and KPRC Click2 Houston. One of the dogs we're featuring is Otis, who we found in the Third Ward with an embedded collar around his neck.

Otis was our first embedded collar dog and we used his picture to raise awareness of this situation that occurs when people put a collar on a dog and later abandon the dog or it runs away. As the dog grows, the collar cannot expand and the dog's skin grows around it resulting in severe infection and injury. Because Otis was rescued, he recovered but if not treated, an animal probably will not survive an embedded collar. For more information about Otis, contact

Barrio Dogs' addresses Houston's stray dog overpopulation by educating residents and focusing on prevention so that fewer animals end up at the shelters. Since we don't have an actual shelter, we will be featuring some of the dogs rescued in Houston's East End with the hope of finding them forever homes on August 15th, the date of the Clear the Shelters event.
